Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting following 2-person kidnapping

HOUSTONA suspect is dead following a Monday police chase that began as a domestic violence call that took place Sunday, police said.

Houston Police Department Chief Executive Thomas Hardin said officers were called to a report of domestic violence between a husband and wife that involved an assault. Officials said they shared a young child together.

Following the incident, the victim in the incident went to stay the night with a relative.

Hardin said that on Monday, the suspect in the domestic violence incident went to the relative’s house, kidnapped the wife and child at gunpoint.

Houston police received a call about the abduction and responded to an area where the person reporting the abduction believed the suspect and victims were located.

Hardin stated that officers had a description of the suspect’s vehicle, located the suspect’s vehicle moving near an apartment complex, attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle fled.

As the vehicle sped away, Hardin said, at two separate times, the suspect reached out the window and fired at the officers.

Then, according to police, a helicopter was called in and the units withdrew in hopes that the suspect would either withdraw or free the hostages. However, this did not happen, officials said.

As the pursuit, which officials said lasted more than 10 minutes, entered the Southwest Freeway, a PIT maneuver was executed in an effort to end the pursuit due to the timing of traffic during the hours of peak.

After the PIT maneuver was executed, Hardin said an officer-involved shooting occurred. Three officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect. It is not clear how many shots were fired.

Officers were then able to extricate both victims from the vehicle, remove the suspect and administer first aid.

Hardin said the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both victims are safe and unharmed, but shaken, officials said.

No other injuries were reported in connection with the chase.

Police could not say how long the highway would be closed as the investigation into the incident continues.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire, who was seen at the scene, said during a news conference that anyone who is a victim of domestic violence should seek help, no matter what.
