Ramsay High School has retired the jersey of WNBA champion Jaylyn Sherrod

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Just over a week after winning a WNBA title with the New York Liberty, Jaylyn Sherrod returned to Birmingham for her Ramsay High School jersey retirement.

Sherrod was recognized Tuesday night in front of family, friends and current students.

“It’s just a blessing. To have time to sit with it, realize the magnitude of it, and walk into it with a lot of gratitude and a lot of contentment,” Sherrod said.

In 2018, Sherrod led the Rams to the state championship game. She was injured to start the 2019 season, but returned to the lineup to help lead the program to the state semifinals.

Ronnie Jackson, who is currently the Ramsay football coach, was the head girls basketball coach when Sherrod came through the program.

“It’s a coach’s dream. To see your kids grow up and do well at the next level, to win the WNBA championship,” Jackson said. “It means the world to all of us here in Birmingham.”
