World Series 5 starting pitchers: Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and Dodgers’ Jack Flaherty face off

The Yankees lived to see another day. Can they book a trip back to Los Angeles and keep their wild World Series title hopes alive in Game 5?

For the Dodgers, the positive news is that they no longer have to rely on a bullpen day if they want to finish the World Series in New York. They will return to a traditional starter on Wednesday as the Yankees put their steadiest arm on the mound.

Despite game 4 wellness winthe pressure still rests squarely on the Yankees’ shoulders to keep their season alive and avoid a gentleman’s sweep.

Here’s a complete guide to the starting pitchers for Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday.

Yankees-Dodgers, Game 5, starting pitchers

Game 5 of the World Series will feature a rematch of the starters from Game 1 as Yankees ace Gerrit Cole and Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty take the mound at Yankee Stadium.

Cole gave the Yankees his all in Game 1, allowing one earned run and no walks over six strong innings. The decision to pull him after 88 pitches caused some controversy after New York blew a small lead and lost on Freddie Freeman’s grand slam. But it’s clear that Aaron Boone trusts his ace more than any other starter.

Flaherty went straight for the Dodgers in Game 1 before allowing a home run to Giancarlo Stanton. Despite the flaw, Los Angeles is justifiably leaning on Flaherty as its ace after numerous pitching injuries threw the rotation into late-season chaos.

The pressure will be on Cole to pitch as well as he did in Game 1, although the real pressure will be on the Yankees offense to show a pulse if he puts up zeroes.

Gerrit Cole statistics

Start WI IP ERA WHIP K K/9
17 8-5 95.0 3.41 1.13 99 9.4

The Yankees had to feel lucky just to get anything from Cole this season after the injury scare in the spring, but it hasn’t been the kind of year the Cy Young winner is used to.

Cole posted a 3.41 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 95 innings of work, perfect marks but a step below the 2.913 ERA and 0.99 WHIP he averaged from 2018-2023 in despite the fact that the pitching was better around the league in 2024. The 34-year-old’s 9.4 rate per nine innings was also his lowest mark since 2017, though it was only a step better in his Cy Young season last year.

Cole didn’t face the Dodgers in the regular season as he returned after the two powerhouses faced off in early June, but he delivered six strong innings and one earned run allowed in Game 1 last week.

Cole’s career postseason ERA is 2.91 with 150 strikeouts in 21 starts, so his October record is exceptionally strong despite a few blowouts over the years.

Here are Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s career numbers against Cole:

AVG .174

Ohtani took Cole deep once in 23 at-bats, including the postseason. He has just four hits against the Yankees ace and has struck out eight times in 24 plate appearances.

Jack Flaherty’s statistics

Start WI IP ERA WHIP K K/9
28 13-7 162.0 3.17 1.07 194 10.8

Flaherty struggled mightily in 2023, but enjoyed a rebound season between the Tigers and Dodgers, posting a 3.17 ERA and 194 strikeouts in 162 innings.

A strikeout rate of 10.8 per nine was Flaherty’s highest in a full season since 2018, and his walk rate of just 2.1 per nine set a new career high.

The postseason was a mixed bag for Flaherty. He was dominant in Game 1 of the NLCS against the Mets, but was torched in Game 5 and was inconsistent in the NLDS. Flaherty has a career 4.73 ERA in the postseason over eight starts, a mark that worsened slightly in October.

Last year, Flaherty threw six shutout innings in his only career regular season start against the Yankees, allowing two hits and striking out four. He allowed two earned runs over 5.1 innings against the Yankees in Game 1, with Stanton’s home run the only major blemish.

Statistics Jack Flaherty vs. Aaron Judge

Here are Yankees star Aaron Judge’s career numbers against Flaherty:

AVG .000
H-AB 0-3
HR 0
RBI 0
BB 0
K 3

Flaherty had never faced Judge before Game 1, but he had the former and future MVP’s number in the opening game of the World Series. In keeping with his struggles throughout the postseason, Judge went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in the Yankees’ heartbreaking loss.

With the season hanging in the balance, Judge will look to turn his luck around against Flaherty on Wednesday.

Yankees-Dodgers, Game 6, starting pitchers

No starting pitchers have been announced for Game 6 of the World Series, if necessary, but it would be a surprise if anyone other than Carlos Rodon of the Yankees and Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers got the start.

Rodon has slotted right behind Cole for the Yankees all season, while Yamamoto will be available on an extra day’s rest to shut down New York’s offense in Game 2 over the weekend.

A potential Game 6 would be Friday night at Dodger Stadium.
