The next Atlantic basin tropical threat continues to be tracked by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in the Caribbean Sea.

Chances for development next week remain in the medium range, but the FOX Forecast Center believes those chances could increase in the final month of Atlantic hurricane season approaches.

A wide area of low pressure is expected to develop in the southwestern Caribbean Sea during the second half of the work week.

“Gradual development is possible later and a tropical depression could form over the weekend as the system begins to move north or northeast toward the central Caribbean Sea,” the NHC wrote in its latest outlook.

The next storm to be named in the Atlantic Basin — which includes the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico — will be named Patty.

Most of the time, these late-season tropical systems are not a threat to USbut occasionally, they can come out of the Caribbean and make an impact Florida or provide a spectacular blow to the eastern seaboard.

“Possibilities appear to include a weak system meandering into the Caribbean and eventually dying out, a stronger system heading toward Haiti, the Dominican Republic, or Puerto Ricoor something in between,” FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross said. “It would take an improbable scenario further out than we can forecast for the system to affect Florida. So, for now, we’ll just keep an eye on him.”

Elsewhere in the Atlantic basin, the tropics are expected to remain quiet as we enter the final days of October and approach early November.
