Gainesville High School Student Arrested for Bringing a Loaded Gun to Campus

A Gainesville high school student currently on probation was arrested Tuesday and charged with bringing a loaded firearm onto campus, according to a news release from the Gainesville Police Department.

According to the release, a student, who has not been identified, was located in a classroom at the school, 1900 NW 13th St., after another student provided a tip to school resource officers.

Officers notified administrators of the situation and removed the student from the classroom. When he told officers they needed to talk to him, the student tried to run, according to the release. He was immediately apprehended and admitted that he had the gun in his bag.

Officers found a loaded 9mm handgun in the student’s bag. The student told officers he found the gun in an area neighborhood and was carrying it for self-defense.

The student was charged with carrying a concealed firearm, resisting without violence and possession of a firearm on school property.
