A man shot by police in St. Paule Monday night is suspicious in fatal shootings at a homeless campMinneapolis police said Tuesday.

Earl Bennett, 40, was in critical but stable condition at the hospital as of Tuesday morning.

Bennett is under arrest in connection with a Sunday shooting at a small homeless encampment in the 4400 block of Snelling Avenue in Minneapolis on Sunday and another shooting that happened Monday in the 3500 block of Columbus Avenue in Minneapolis, the police chief said of Minneapolis, Brian O’Hara. announced on Tuesday.

Sunday’s triple shooting killed two men and sent a woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Monday’s shooting happened around 5:15 p.m., and police found a man behind an address with potentially life-threatening injuries. According to Minneapolis police, initial information indicated that other shooting victims and the shooting suspect were possibly at the address where the initial shooting occurred.

Minneapolis police shared information with state law enforcement about the suspect after the two shootings, according to O’Hara.

Police shooting in St. Paule

Bennett’s Monday night encounter with police took place in St. Paul. Officers were called to the 400 block of Pierce Street just before 7:45 p.m. on a report of shots fired nearby. Other callers also reported hearing gunshots and believed they were coming from the direction of Snelling and University avenues.

Responding officers found a man, identified Tuesday as Bennett, with a handgun near Snelling and Charles avenues.

“When the officers encountered the man, he pointed the gun he had at his own head and the officers began to negotiate with him to put it down,” said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a police spokesman in St. Paul. He didn’t want to and went south on Snelling Avenue. “Officers pursued the man and continued to speak to him in an effort to get him to put down the weapon and surrender.”
