Movember marks 18 years of supporting men’s health

From 1st November men’s charity Movember encourages everyone to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

“Over 1.4 million men worldwide are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and sadly this burden is expected to increase to 2.3 million men by 2040,” Movember officials said in a press release.

β€œIn Canada, 39 men will die of testicular cancer in 2022; that is, more than three men every month’.

Focusing on improving men’s health, Movember began its campaign in 2007, inspiring other initiatives including the Oil Rig Noise Challenge.

Oil Rig Rumble Challenge

For the third year, members of Alberta’s oil and gas industry will take part in the the rumble of the oil rig challenge in November.

“It’s not just about growing mustaches or raising funds for Movember – it’s about starting important conversations about men’s health that will help men live healthier, longer and happier lives,” officials said.

The main aim of the 30-day campaign is to get men talking about their physical and mental health, even at work.

“We’re promoting Movember to raise awareness of the importance of mental wellness with our employees and the support we have for them,” said Secure Energy Vice President Greg Filipchuk.

“We need to focus and make sure men and women take care of themselves.”

Movember data shows that suicide is the second leading cause of death for Canadian men aged 15 to 44.

“Globally, we lose a man to suicide every minute of every day – and more than two out of three suicide deaths are men.”

This year, the charity hopes to surpass the $1.06 million it raised in 2023.
