The Dodgers have predicted they will lose $71 million in superstar cap space if Juan Soto signs with LA

The Los Angeles Dodgers are no strangers to outdoing the rest of Major League Baseball for free agents. But they can’t have it each a good player on their roster maybe?

After an offseason in which the Dodgers brought in Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and two other All-Stars, Los Angeles is up to its old tricks again. This time, they are rumored to be going after New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto, who they are currently dueling in the World Series.

Soto is looking at a $600 million contract and possibly more depending on how high the bidding war goes. The Dodgers are reportedly poised to match that dollar amount, but if they do, a fan favorite from the 2024 team is likely on the way out.

Teoscar Hernández, one of two other 2024 All-Stars mentioned by the Dodgers, was only playing on a one-year contract. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman predicted Monday that Hernández would go in free agency if the Dodgers were able to lure Soto to LA

“It’s crazy to say a team won’t need Teoscar Hernandez — a two-time All-Star who just hit 33 starts in the regular season and hit third and fourth all postseason — but that’s absolutely the case . Do the Dodgers have to bring Hernandez back if they signed Soto? Rothman said.

“This will be Hernandez’s best chance to sign a lucrative multi-year deal. With both corner outfield spots (assuming Soto signs) and the DH position filled in Los Angeles, the Dodgers will be more than fine to let Hernandez go.”

It was Hernández who answered Soto’s game-tying home run with a two-run shot Saturday to put the Dodgers ahead for good. He has provided big swing after big swing for LA all season and Dodgers fans would hate to see him go.

Unfortunately, Soto will probably relegate Hernández to corner outfield, and that’s if the Dodgers actually have enough budget to pay him. Hernández’s three-year, $71 million contract cap may not be Juan Soto’s money, but it’s still a decent chunk of change.

After a career year with the Dodgers, Hernández may want to stick around. But he’s also 32 and needs to cash in on his increased value, so if LA won’t pay him what he’s worth, he can be sure another team will.
