Santa Monica police shooting: Officer attacked by knife-wielding man outside police station, video shows; suspect killed

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Newly released body cam footage shows a man violently attacks and stabs an officer with a knife outside a Southern California police station. The standoff ends with the officer shooting and killing the suspect.

The attack happened on October 5th outside the Santa Monica police headquarters on Olympic Drive. Police say the officer was heading outside to speak with someone when the suspect appeared at the front door.

During the encounter, a video shows the officer asking the suspect what was in his jacket.

“What’s in your jacket? I’m kind of nervous with your hand in your jacket like that,” the officer tells the suspect.

The suspect responds by saying “Are you nervous?” and then lunged at the officer.

“Without warning, the individual attacked the officer while pulling a knife from his clothing. The suspect slashed and stabbed the officer,” police said in a statement.

A struggle ensues and the officer fights back, the video shows. He then fatally shot the suspect.

Before the stabbing, surveillance video shows the suspect assaulting a Target employee inside a store and stealing kitchen knives.

The policeman was taken to hospital and released the next day. He was stabbed several times, but his bulletproof vest helped him survive the attack.

The shooting is being investigated by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.
