SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZ Family) — A new report says safety protocols were not violated in an incident in which a Scottsdale police detective died after an accidental shooting at a city facility earlier this year.

On June 13, Scottsdale Detective Ryan So and fellow officers from the department’s Special Assignment Unit were returning to a police station. near 78th Street and Greenway Road after the execution of a mandate. An Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) report states the group was moving their equipment back into the garage when Det. So I grabbed a backpack from the back of a vehicle.

Safety inspection shows that a rifle that was in the folded position fell out of the bag and discharged when the bed hit the pavement. Det. So he was hit in the neck and rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

A safety investigation was launched following So’s death. The report says no citations were issued and all active-duty police officers attended training and refresher courses, which included weapons training.

Scottsdale police have not been inspected by ADOSH in the past five years, according to the report.

The Mesa Police Department is also investigating the accidental shooting as an outside agency.

So has been with the department for more than nine years and served in the US Navy. He was laid to rest and is survived by his wife and three children.
