Man killed in officer-involved shooting identified

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed during an officer-involved shooting in Springfield.

Elijah Ayers, spokesman for the Hampden District Attorney’s office, said a 911 call came in around 1 a.m. Thursday for the 0-100 block of Lyman Street. When police arrived, the subject of the 911 call, Devin Lewis, 24, of Springfield, was seen at the entrance of an apartment building with two guns. “Due to circumstances that remain under investigation, two officers fired their service pistols, with one officer striking the 24-year-old, injuring him,” Ayers explained.

Officers provided medical assistance at the scene. Lewis was taken to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The case remains under investigation by the district attorney’s office, along with Springfield police.
