“Our hearts go out to the community of West Chester, Ohio after a long and devastating search for Joshua, a non-verbal 6-year-old with autism.

“In 2024, 56 children and 2 adults died after disappearing from places such as homes, schools, churches and parks. This includes 5 children who have died since November 12. The vast majority of these deaths were caused by accidental drowning.

“As the upcoming holidays pose additional risks, the National Autism Association (NAA) is issuing a second urgent call for local communities to be aware of autism-related loitering/running away and for caregivers to remain hypervigilant. We ask everyone to share the prevention of wandering. materials that are available through several organizations, including the National Autistic Association, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Autism Speaks, and the Autistic Society In a six-year study conducted by the National Autistic Association, incidents of wandering occurred under non-parent supervision 45% of the time, meaning schools, relatives and other carers should be informed.

“Additional noise, travel, and routine disruptions in the coming weeks may increase exit-seeking behaviors. Please use all available precautions, consult the prevention tips on our website, and help educate others that if a child with autism is missing, call 911. immediately and search first nearby water.
