HOUSTON – The woman accused of starting a warehouse fire who left Houston Firefighter Marcelo Garcia dead has now been charged with murder, court records show.

Yesenia Espinoza Mendez, 38, now faces a charge of murder in addition to arson.

Authorities say Espinoza Mendez is responsible for the Nov. 6 warehouse fire at Supply Row.

Garcia was killed when a wall suddenly collapsed while fighting the fire. Another firefighter was hospitalized with injuries.

Garcia was 42 years old and had been with the department for 10 years. He spent the last six years at Station 23.
