TBI investigates Smithville shooting after DA allegedly fired shots during suspect’s arrest

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting in Smithville at the request of a District Attorney General.

The TBI confirmed to WSMV4 that 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway (serving Dekalb Clay, Cumberland, Overton, Pickett, Putnam and White counties) has asked them to investigate the incident that happened Thursday night.

A statement from Dunaway’s office said Attorney General Chris Stanford (who serves Warren and Van Buren counties) fired shots while trying to arrest a man on outstanding warrants from Warren County.

No injuries were reported in the shooting, the TBI said, and DeKalb County deputies confirmed they had the suspect in custody. Dunaway’s office also identified the suspect as Caleb Brookins.

Additionally, Dunaway’s office said a woman, identified as Hannah Rose, was arrested after she struck a deputy with her car while trying to flee the scene. She was charged with aggravated assault and felony evading arrest.

The officer was injured and taken to the hospital.

Brookins was transported to Warren County and Rose was taken to the DeKalb County Jail.

An investigation into the incident is active and ongoing, the TBI said.
