Houston Katy Freeway crash: Woman, girl killed; TxDOT worker, passenger injured

A fiery three-vehicle crash along the I-10 Katy Freeway in Houston left a woman and a child dead Friday morning. Two other people — including a TxDOT worker — were injured.

The crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes between Washington Avenue and I-610. Drivers should expect the highway to be closed for several hours.

According to the preliminary investigation, police say the woman and the girl appear to have been in a vehicle parked on the right shoulder of the highway when another car hit their vehicle.

Police say TxDOT was working in the area and one of their trucks was also hit. All three vehicles caught fire. A TxDOT worker was sitting outside the truck and received several burns.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, and the girl, said to be between 8 and 10 years old, both died.

The TxDOT worker and a passenger in the vehicle that struck the strike were taken to the hospital, police said. They were last reported to be in stable condition.

Police say the driver of the vehicle that was struck remained at the scene and is cooperating. An investigation will be done to determine whether or not the driver was impaired.
