Juvenile suspect in custody after hitting police vehicles with skid steer in Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) — An investigation is underway after the Hastings Police Department responded to a scene involving a skid steer that was then used to ram multiple police units.

HPD was first notified of a skid loader traveling southbound on North Elm Ave. Authorities located the construction equipment near E. 13th St., according to police. and North Pine Ave. and attempted to contact the driver, who then began using the equipment to hit the police. patrol units.

The department said the suspect, who is described as a juvenile, damaged three occupied patrol cars before heading west on 14th St. During the encounter, police said an officer fired his weapon at the mini loader and failed to hit the suspect.

The suspect then continued to elude police until he stopped in the 1600 block of N. Lincoln Ave. Law enforcement then used chemical munitions to stop the suspect and take him into custody. The individual was taken to Mary Lanning Healthcare for medical clearance before being returned to police custody.

Since the suspect is a juvenile, no names will be released at this time. According to HPD, no significant injuries were reported. The Hastings Police Department and the Adams County District Attorney’s Office have asked the Nebraska State Patrol to complete an investigation into this incident.

Hastings Police were assisted by Hastings Fire & Rescue, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Hastings Street Department.
