Greedy People Movie Review: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s film is both humorous and disturbing

Greedy People is a chaotic crime thriller set in a small island town that unfolds after a million dollars is discovered in an accidental murder. What follows is a cascade of bad decisions, greed and moral dilemmas that will keep you on the edge of your seat in this dark comedy-drama.

Police officer Will Shelley (Himesh Patel) moves to a small island town with his pregnant wife Paige (Lily James). However, a tragic mistake during his first case sets off a series of betrayals, greed and murder. Will accidentally kills a woman and, along with his partner Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), stages the incident as a robbery gone wrong, discovering a hidden stash of cash in the process. As suspicions grow, secrets begin to unravel – the victim’s husband Wallace, her lover Keith and the hired killers become entangled in a deadly spiral. Paige hires an assassin, Terry betrays Will, and money becomes a deadly curse.

Written by Michael Vukadinovich, the script is both entertaining and challenging, deftly blending humor with tension. The narrative explores the complexities of human greed and morality while maintaining an engaging and almost playful tone.

Director Potsy Ponciroli skillfully captures the claustrophobic charm of the small-town setting, using it as a backdrop for unraveling complex relationships. Joseph steals the show with his versatility, shifting seamlessly between comedic slapstick and chilling menace as a rogue police officer. His performance keeps the audience swaying between laughter and anxiety.

Patel, on the other hand, infuses his character with subtlety and depth, providing an emotional weight that grounds the narrative amidst the chaos. Lily James excels as the witty voice of both reason and rebellion.

Greedy People successfully combines strong performances, a compelling script, and an intriguing premise to create a film that is both humorous and disturbing.

The movie is available on Lionsgate India.
