The man accused of killing Todd Pinion is not pleading guilty a second time

The man accused of killing Todd Joseph Pinion in northern San Luis Obispo County last month appeared in court again Thursday but has yet to enter a plea.

Tyler Grant Stevens, 21, of Paso Robles is accused of murder animal abuse and an increase in hate crimes.

The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office says the hate crime charge stems from the belief that Stevens killed Pinion because of his belief about Pinion’s sexual orientation.

The animal abuse charge was added because of Pinion’s dog, Spock, who was found dead on the 101 freeway days before Pinion’s body was discovered near Santa Margarita on Nov. 2.

With Pinion’s mother and Stevens’ parents present, Thursday’s hearing was brief.

Stevens’ attorney asked that his client’s trial be continued. A new date has been set for December 18.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old is being held without bond at the San Luis Obispo Jail.

friday, a candlelight vigil for Pinion takes place in San Luis Obispo.

The community is invited to the Pride and Diversity Center Gala at 1060 Palm St. between 17:00 and 18:00
