Baby girl found safe near Fochville after carjacking, suspects on the run

A little girl has been found safe after her mother’s car was hijacked with her in it.

According to Wedela Police Station Commander Captain Wayne Pestana, a Fochville resident was driving her white Honda in the Vaal Maseru area on the R500 when her one-year-old daughter started crying.

She pulled over on the side of the road to check on the baby.

Two men, one armed with a knife, approached the mother and threatened to get into the passenger side of the vehicle.

She, however, managed to escape from the car.

Instead of going after her, the men jumped into her car and drove off with the little girl still inside. Fochville CPF Patrolmen responded after receiving an alert of a hijacked white Honda with the caller’s one-year-old child in it.

The vehicle was found abandoned in Greenspark with the girl still in the vehicle. The suspects fled.

The child was suffering from heat exhaustion. Quick work by patrol officers and other members of the Fochville Community Policing Forum (CPF) ensured she was quickly reunited with her mother. The two were taken to hospital after the incident.

The trio task force of the police is now investigating cases of hijacking and kidnapping.

The three-way task force is responsible for investigating home burglaries, business burglaries, car thefts and possession of unlicensed firearms cases.
