BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – An investigation is underway and an employee suspected of theft has quit a large retailer in Boardman.

Officers were called to the store on Boardman-Poland Road Monday following reports of theft by an employee.

A loss prevention representative told police the suspect stole more than $16,000 from the store in a gift card scheme while she was working as a cashier. The employee worked at the store between November 8-13.

Loss Prevention said the employee rigged the sale of gift cards with a cash payment and would then use the fraudulent gift cards without actually paying for them. This scheme happened more than 30 times, according to the police report.

The cashier resigned before loss prevention finished its investigation.

A police report has been made and the investigation is ongoing.
