Woman abandoned newborn, charged with child endangerment, SAPD says

SAN ANTONIO – A woman who gave birth along a route from the northeast side and she abandoned her newborn child on Tuesday was charged and identified, according to San Antonio police.

Julie Alexander, 37, was charged with abandoning and endangering a child, a second-degree felony, Bexar County Jail records show.

SAPD said officers responded to reports of a man with a newborn in the 1900 block of Austin Highway around 3:30 p.m. The man told police he found the child along a trail on the Salado Creek Greenway.

According to police, the man said he saw a woman leave the greenway and found a newborn baby on the trail. He assumed the child belonged to him.

He then took the child to seek help, police said.

Alexander was later found in another location. The San Antonio Fire Department said she and the child were taken to a hospital.

According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the child is still in the hospital to be monitored for any health issues.

In Texas, parents can drop off their newborns in special, alarmed boxes at fire stations and other designated locations.

Alexander is still in the Bexar County Jail. A second-degree felony is punishable by up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
