Tom Brady says parents screw up kids by not allowing them to fail

Tom Brady is quite possibly the most famous athlete in the world — or, at least, the most famous football player.

With Brady’s fame comes the responsibility to set an example for the legions of young fans who cheer him on. And apparently, he has some interesting advice for them and their parents.

Tom Brady believes parents should allow their children to fail.

Brady was invited to Fortune Magazine’s Global Forumwhere he spoke with editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell.

During their conversation, Brady discussed his own parenting style and what he thinks is going wrong for kids today. Brady said: “Think about the world today, how we’re failing these kids. Every time they mess up, we send them to an easier place to succeed.”

By allowing children to skip the hard parts of life, Brady argued, we do them a major disservice.

“We have all faced different challenges in life; we have all faced our own adversities. Check out the hardest things that have ever happened. We look back on these and realize they were the best things that could have happened,” he explained.

That’s a lesson Brady learned firsthand. He said it was necessary for him “mill every year” in high school to finally make the starting quarterback position his senior year.

Brady argued that in today’s world, most kids will transfer to another, less competitive school with their parents’ approval. That’s the problem, he said.

Brady insisted that he “never would have had that success if I hadn’t gone through all the challenges of high school and college sports.” Without the struggle, he would never have seen his immense achievements.

And Brady certainly was successful. ESPN reported that the 47-year-old scored 649 touchdowns during his historic NFL career that began in 2000.

Tom Brady talks parenting from experience as a father himself.

While some may find it difficult get parenting tips from a celebrity like Brady, he might know what he’s talking about.

According to People MagazineBrady has three children: Jack, whose mother is actress Bridget Moynahan, Benjamin, and Vivian, whose mother is model Gisele Bundchen.

Brady has spoken about his own parenting style, which he says is an attempt to mirror his parents, who were “supportive and reliable”.

“The blessing my parents gave him: When I was that tall, when I was a kid who was a backup quarterback, they never said, man, don’t do this, it’s going to be too hard, think- you to another backup plan,” Brady. told. “They said, go ahead — that’s probably my parenting style.”

Experts actually agree with Brady’s theory about letting kids experience the struggle.

While being a parent doesn’t make Brady a parenting expert, he might be on to something with the idea that you should let kids fail.

Psychologist Liz Nissim-Matheis wrote about the same topic for Psychology Today.

Referring to difficult circumstances in life where we can’t always succeed, Nissim-Matheis said, “It’s okay for our children to have these experiences. In fact, we want them to have these experiences while still living under our roof. Let them fail; let them fall.”

“Don’t make it your job to make it better by calling the coach, the teacher, or anyone else because things seem unfair to your childand she’s angry,” she continued.

This fits with Brady’s claim that kids shouldn’t take the easy way out. To let parents take over a situation for them would be to do so.

“Although the thought of allowing our children to fail or fail sounds scary and may even triggers feelings of guilt or shame for you, as a parent, to know that you are giving your child the skills they need to grow into healthy, well-adjusted adults,” Nissim-Matheis concluded.

For Brady, who has talked about the importance of getting out of his comfort zone, that would certainly ring true.
