Spain closes its embassy in Kiev ahead of a huge attack expected from Russia

The Spanish embassy in Kiev was “temporarily” closed on Wednesday due to the risk of a large-scale attack from Russia.

Spanish diplomats made the decision because of the “increased risk of airstrikes throughout Ukraine.”

It is recommended that Spaniards living in the country “take extreme security measures; respect all recommendations of local authorities; and always know where the nearest shelter is’.

The US, Italy and Greece also closed their embassies on Wednesday.

The US Embassy reported that it had “received specific information about a potential significant airstrike on November 20”.

Its personnel were instructed to remain sheltered, while, similar to the advice to the Spanish, American citizens in Kiev were told to “prepare to seek immediate shelter in the event of an air alert”.

The announcement comes a day after Ukraine used US long-range missiles to attack Russian territory, after Joe Biden’s administration recently gave permission to do so to Volodymyr Zelensky’s government in the 1,000th day since the beginning of the conflict.

Those missiles were already used by the Ukrainian military on Tuesday, according to the Kremlin, which accused the US of “adding fuel to the fire” in the conflict that began with Russia’s February 2022 invasion.

The American press also claims that Joe Biden approved the supply of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine.
