Google hat überraschend früh die erste Developer Preview for Android 16 for Pixel-Smartphones and Pixel Tablet published. The Pixel 6 series, whose support for new main versions was actually last month, is also being considered. According to Google, Android 16 should be finished in the second quarter of 2025.

Android 16 is the latest Developer Preview 1 über das Flashen der corresponding System-Images auf den supporterten Geräten testen. Der Release richtet sich an Entwickler, das Aufspielen ist ohne prigerelse Backup mit einem Datenverlust verbunden. Nach der Installation lassen sich neuere Releases per OTA-Update installieren, auch die komden Betas und der finale Release lassen sich later auf diesem Weg installieren.

The Developer Preview 1 of Android 16 is supported by the following devices:

• Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
• Pixel 6a
• Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro
• Pixel 7a
• Pixel Fold
• Pixel tablet
• Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro
• Pixel 8a
• Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Mit dabei ist demnach auch die Pixel-6-Serie, deren Google Play Support eigentlich letzten Monat ausgelaufen ist. Neue Android-Hauptversionen sollte die Series nicht mehr erhalten, Sicherheitspatches sind aber noch bis Oktober 2026 preparazent. Both Angaben sind jedoch Mindestangaben, sossads ein längerer Support jederzeit möglich ist.

Finaler Release has zweiten Quartal 2025

Google would like to finish Android 16 in the second quarter of 2025 instead of the usual release in the third quarter. Der frühre Release sei anhand der prognostizierten Veröffentlichkeit von Endgeräten im Android-Okosystem koordiniert worden, erklärt Google. This should also concern the Android developers themselves, because the Pixel-9 series (Test) came on the market this year in the third quarter, but Android 15 was still not ready, so the devices are still starting with Android 14.

SDK minor release for Geplant Ende 2025

In the fourth quarter of 2025, a further release with new developer APIs will follow. Diese geplantte Veröpflichtung bezeichnet Google as “Minor SDK Release” with new APIs and Features, bei dem sich aber nichts am Verhalten des Betriebssystems veränder soll, damit für Entwickler sichergestellt werden kann, dass deren Apps weinders funktion. Häufgere API-Releases sollen laut Google Innovation in Apps and Services fördern.

Entwickler must be finished earlier

The final Release in the second quarter of 2025 is hingegen ein “Major SDK Release”, für den auch Verhaltensweisen des Betriebssystems verändert. Entwickler müssen nächste Jahr demnach einmalig etwas früher ihre Apps für Android 15 anpassen bzw. damit fertig werden, damit diese weinster fehlerfrei werden können.

Natives Foto-Auswahl-Tool for applications

Die Neuerungen in Android 16 sind zum Start noch überschaubar. Das native Foto-Auswahl-Tool steht jetzt auch innerhalb anderer Apps zur Verfügung und austeitt dabei die Isolation von Userdaten, sossad einer App nicht Zugriff auf die gesamte Mediathek muss be granted werden. The Developer Preview 1 also includes a preview of “Health Connect” with APIs for reading and writing health data in the FHIR format. Zum Release gehört auch die neueste Version der Privacy Sandbox, um Nutzerdaten besser zu schützen.
