An investigation is underway in Kentucky after two policemen were shot while conducting a traffic stop on a car that had been reported stolen.

The incident happened in Louisville’s Smoketown neighborhood around 8 p.m. Tuesday when officers from the Fourth Division stopped a stolen car in the 400 block of Roselane Street, Louisville Metro Police Deputy Chief Col. Emily McKinley said. during a press conference.

Several people were in the car when one of the occupants began struggling for a firearm with the two officers, she said.

Both officers and a suspect were shot during the altercation.

Police told the local WDRB office that an officer was shot in the hand while the other was shot in the leg. None of their injuries were life-threatening.

The police officers, who have not been identified, were transported to the University Hospital. The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to Jewish Hospital and is in stable condition, McKinley said.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg briefly joined Tuesday night’s news conference to say he had visited both officers in the hospital, adding that they were “doing well and on the road to recovery.”

“I want to say a huge thank you to both the officers and everyone in LMPD who go (sic) above and beyond every day to work to keep us all safe throughout the community,” Greenberg said.

He thanked him too University of Louisville Hospital, where both officers were taken, for his “extraordinary work”.

McKinley said the investigation is in its preliminary stages and updates can be expected Wednesday.
