6 dead, at least 10 injured in Pumwani fire tragedy

Fire tragedy in Pumwani village in Nairobi

At least six people were killed on Tuesday night, November 19, in a fire in Kitui sprawling village, Pumwani area, Nairobi.

Police said at least ten others, mostly men, were injured and are in hospitals after the incident.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, police said.

More than 50 houses were flattened in the incident. That left many homeless, according to emergency service providers.

Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei said they were investigating the tragedy.

“That’s a lot of people who will die in such an incident. They are all men and we are investigating the tragedy,” he said.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, at least 16 people were treated for minor injuries as efforts to find missing people continued into the night.

The source of the fire, which was brought under control several hours later, has yet to be determined, police said.

“Together with the Nairobi City Fire Department and members of the community, we managed to contain a fire in Kitui village, Majengo, Nairobi. The Kenya Red Cross remains on the scene supporting efforts to locate the missing persons,” the organization said in a tweet.

Member of Parliament Kamkunji Yusuf Hassan mourned the dead.

“This tragedy marks one of the deadliest fires in Kamukunji. Emergency crews are on the scene, searching the affected area for other victims. Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.”

“My sincere condolences to the residents of Kitui village who lost family members and friends in this massive fire that quickly engulfed part of the neighborhood,” he said.

Nairobi County Government officials said they will send teams to the site to assess the site for necessary actions.

Officials said they plan to help those affected rebuild their structures.

Those in hospitals will also receive help.

This is the latest fire in the area in a series that has occurred.

Police say most slums in the city report at least one fire every day.

This stretched the services of firefighters and others.

Lack of roads to areas to improve response was cited as part of the challenges for emergency service providers.

Those affected are camping in local schools and asking for help to rebuild their structures.

A similar incident in Mathare area left many homeless on Monday evening.
