A man fatally shot himself during a traffic stop Monday night in Garland, police said

Garland police are investigating the death of a man who apparently shot himself during a traffic stop Monday night, the department announced Tuesday.

Around 11 p.m., a Garland officer stopped a vehicle occupied by three people in the 800 block of Bay Shore Drive, according to a police news release.

Police said during the stop, the officer became suspicious of the occupants of narcotics. While the officer was investigating, the front passenger unexpectedly exited the vehicle and ran away away, officials said.

A second officer initiated a foot pursuit. Moments later, a single gunshot rang out and the suspect fell to the ground, police said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

An investigation by Garland police revealed the man “suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest” during the chase. According to the release, police recovered a loaded handgun near the suspect, which was later confirmed to have been stolen from Plano.

Police said no officers discharged their weapons during this incident. The officer’s body-worn camera recorded the entire incident, according to the release.

It is not known if the gunshot wound was intentional or accidental, police said.

The identities of the man who was killed, the driver and the rear passenger have been withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A police spokesman said both the driver and the rear passenger were still in custody. The driver was arrested on traffic violations, while the rear passenger, who also tried to flee, was arrested on evading warrants and an unrelated misdemeanor, police said.
