Judge rules alleged mass stabber incompetent to stand trial in Shasta County

The man accused of carrying out a mass stabbing that killed a woman was in court on Tuesday after criminal proceedings were previously suspended.

Last month, 31-year-old Christopher Witcher allegedly stabbed four people at the Market Street Manor Motel in Redding.

Witcher is accused of killing a woman and injuring three men during the attack.

According to the Shasta County Prosecutor’s Office, during his pretrial hearing, Witcher’s defense has raised concerns about his mental competency and proceedings were halted until a doctor could evaluate him.

After evaluation, Tuesday’s hearing revealed that Witcher is not currently mentally competent to stand trial.

The judge ordered that Witcher be sent to a Parole Program, a system in California that treats patients who are found not guilty by reason of insanity, incompetent to stand trial, mentally disturbed felons or parolees who have been released on an outpatient basis .

The defendant will return to court on December 3 at 8:30 a.m
