The Giants add another QB, effectively making Daniel Jones the fourth stringer

The New York Giants they seem to be doing their part to make sure quarterback Daniel Jones never plays another game for them, even in an emergency.

On Tuesday, the Giants signed veteran QB Tim Boyle to the practice squad, according to Art Stapleton of North Jersey. Jones was finally benched this week after going 2-8. Now, choice no. 6 of 2019 will effectively become a fourth-string QB behind new starter Tommy DeVitobackups Drew Lock and Boyle.

The Giants protect themselves from having to use Jones and trigger a $23 million injury guarantee. If Jones had suffered a serious injury that prevented him from taking a medical on March 12, he would have been guaranteed $12 million. And if they couldn’t get one by Week 1 of next season, they’d get another $11 million.

In all likelihood, Jones will never play again for the Giants, who will cut him this offseason and either draft a quarterback or add one to the bridge until they find a franchise QB. Jones essentially earned $82 million for two years of work — three wins.

Overall, he went 24-44-1 as the Giants’ starter, throwing for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions over six seasons (70 games, 69 starts). He helped the Giants make the playoffs once, in 2022.

The decision to bench Jones does not completely eliminate the possibility of the accident guarantee, however.

Unlike quarterback Derek Carr in 2022Jones was not sent home as a protective measure and will remain with the team to finish the season.

The injury guarantee can still kick in if Jones is injured during an organized team activity on the Giants’ premises (at practice, in the weight room, among other things), so there’s still a chance — albeit a slim one — that the Giants they’re on the hook for the guarantee money after the season.

New York fans will remember Tim Boyle for his three-game stint with the Jets in 2023, when he went 0-2 as a starter following Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson’s torn Achilles. The Jets released Boyle in December and he was picked up by the Houston Texans, though he did not play in an NFL game. He played in two games with the Miami Dolphins before being released on October 26. Boyle also played for the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.

Calfa has thrown for 1,087 yards, four touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 22 career games.
