Police say man stabbed in Newcastle over comments about littering

A 22-year-old man stabbed on a Newcastle street was allegedly attacked after making a comment about littering, police say.

Emergency services were called to Beaumont Street, Hamilton, just after 2.30am on Sunday.

Paramedics treated the man for multiple stab wounds, but he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Two people have been charged with his murder.

The incident happened in front of a post office on the popular restaurant strip.

Newcastle Police District Commander Inspector Kylie Endemi said the man had stopped for dinner after finishing work in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“He just made a comment to a group of people about littering,” she said.

“As a result of this comment, we will state that a group of people physically assaulted him.”

The “grieving” family

Police have not yet released the name of the man who died as family members are still being informed.

Superintendent Endemi expressed his deepest sympathy to his “grieving” relatives.

“It’s shocking, it’s upsetting, and the police are just as concerned about this incident as the community,” she said.

“Our thoughts are absolutely with the family of this poor young man.

“I’m living a family’s worst nightmare right now, losing my 22-year-old son to what, we’ll pretend, wasn’t his fault.”

Charges heard in court

Two people were arrested following the alleged attack on Monday.

Jason Talbot, 27, was arrested at Waratah Police Station and charged with murder, while Alivia Briggs, 33, was arrested in the Sydney suburb of Bankstown.

She was also charged with murder.

Mr Talbot’s case was briefly mentioned at Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday afternoon.

The court heard Mr Talbot was not called into the courtroom and remained in the cells.

No bail application was made but the court was told there had been a breach of bail on unrelated charges.

After reading several pages of documents, Magistrate Janine Lacey said “on the balance of probabilities … a breach was found”.

He will stand trial in January on the murder charge.

Ms Briggs’ case was referred to Bankstown Local Court where no bail was applied for and she was formally refused.

Police investigations are continuing.
