Local law enforcement is warning shoppers about holiday scams

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Local law enforcement officers are urging people to practice safe holiday shopping.

According to the Monroe Police Department, officers see an increase in property crimes and cyber crimes during the holiday season.

MPD Public Information Officer Matt Schmitz says there are criminals looking to take advantage of vulnerable shoppers during the holidays.

He says the best way to be safe is to make sure you shop in familiar places, with others, and remember to never throw shopping boxes outside your home.

“We ask the public to place your items in your vehicles in a secure area and make sure the doors are locked. If possible, hide those items in your vehicle, possibly the trunk or sunroof portion of your vehicle, in an area that is not visible from the outside,” Schmitz said.

Officer Matt Schmitz says to always remember if a deal seems too good to be true, then there’s a chance the offer isn’t legitimate.
