Carolina Beach police officer pleads no plea to fatal crash charges

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Prosecutors have provided an update on a Carolina Beach police officer charged in connection with the death of a 40-year-old man.

According to the district attorney’s office and recent court documents, Cavin Sydes pleaded no contest to two other charges and the vehicular manslaughter charge was dismissed.

“On November 6, 2024, the State accepted a voluntary dismissal of the misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charge in State v. Cavin Sydes 24CR 257781. The dismissal was pursuant to a negotiated plea offer in which Mr. Sydes pleaded no contest to Reckless Driving and responsible for Speeding 59 in a 45 MPH zone,” court documents state.

The state did not comment further due to a pending civil matter.

The Carolina Beach Police Department said Sydes is no longer on administrative leave.
