How TikTok exposed explosive ‘pedophile’ teacher scandal at Oregon school — and how administrators knew about it for years

Parents and students at an Oregon high school are in an angry uproar after two alleged pedophile teachers were arrested last week on charges of sexually abusing at least nine underage girls — and administrators knew about the allegations for years. days and they did nothing.

The choir teacher of St. Helens, Eric Stearns, 46, and recently retired teacher Mark Collins, 64, were arrested Tuesday and charged with a nearly decade-long series of sex crimes against teenage students, according to authorities.

School officials had received complaints of possible abuse as early as 2019, but allegedly ignored red flags and failed to contact law enforcement — and then allowed Stearns to remain in the classroom even as police launched their recent investigation against him. KGW 8 reported.

It took a viral TikTok to bring the outrageous allegations to light — and prompt authorities to finally act. The investigation began after a former student — Doug Weaver, 36 — posted a video in early September accusing the school of protecting predatory teachers when he attended, according to KGW 8.

Weaver received messages from current students alleging that teachers were still assaulting children, prompting him to notify St. Louis police. Helens. he told the New York Times.

“(The tip) referred to a high school teacher, last name Stearns, who was involved in inappropriate behavior,” said Acting St. Helens, Joseph Hogue, for KGW 8.

Stearns is accused of sexually abusing six underage girls between 2015 and 2024, and Collins was accused of abusing three students between 2017 and 2023.

If convicted, Stearns and Collins would not be the school’s first pedagogic pedophiles.

Another teacher, Kyle Wroblewski, pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual abuse in 2019, and the school district settled a lawsuit with the victim for $3.5 million, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.

In subsequent TikTok videos, Weaver described “a collection” of male teachers who behaved appallingly toward students during her time at St. Helens.

Another teacher instructed a student to open a desk drawer that contained nude photos of the teacher’s wife, and he would put girls he found attractive in front of the class, calling them his “TAs.”
