CT DOT reminds drivers to slow down, pull over for emergency vehicles

MERIDEN, CT (WFSB) – State officials and traffic safety advocates sought to remind drivers to be aware of emergency response on the side of highways.

In Connecticut, the law is to slow down and move over.

Representatives from the state Department of Transportation, along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal and other officials, held a news conference Monday morning in Meriden.

They said their goal was to raise awareness during Accident Response Safety Week.

Blumenthal announced the introduction of his bipartisan Slow Down, Move Over resolution to raise awareness about moving over laws across the country. It is intended to help reduce injuries and deaths caused by vehicle crashes.

He said the resolution is also meant to recognize the important role that law enforcement officers, fire and rescue personnel, emergency medical services personnel, tow truck operators and transportation workers play in road safety .

The Slow Down, Move Over resolution was inspired by Corey Iodice, a tow truck operator who was tragically struck and killed on Connecticut’s Merritt Parkway in 2020 while assisting a motorist.

Blumenthal also referenced the case of Meriden native Andrew DiDomenico, a DOT worker who was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver in June.
