Wu reaffirms Boston’s sanctuary city status ahead of Trump’s second term

Mayor Michelle Wu reiterated Boston’s status as a sanctuary city over the weekend under President-elect Donald Trump it doubles on mass deportation plans when he takes office.

“The last thing we want is for the people who are part of our economy, our school system, our community and the fabric of our city to suddenly feel like they have to retreat into the shadows,” Wu. he said during an interview with WCVB On the Record Sunday.

Wu was a city councilor when the city passed from The law of trustwhich prohibits Boston police from questioning, detaining or arresting a person only for non-criminal immigration purposes. She supported the act when it was introduced in 2014 and again when it was revised in 2019.

The ordinance allows police to cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities in criminal investigations, such as human trafficking and drug trafficking.

Wu said Boston’s sanctuary status is important to ensure undocumented residents feel comfortable doing things like sending their children to school.

“We want immigrants to know that it’s safe for everyone, to be able to feel comfortable calling emergency services, reporting a crime, asking for help and generally being a part of our community,” she said.

Other Massachusetts officials also rejected Trump’s promised deportation plan.

Gov. Maura Healey said the Massachusetts State Police will “absolutely not“immigration law enforcement assistance. Attorney General Andrea Campbell told reporters that she and attorneys general across the country are ready to challenge the administration entered with lawsuits.

Healey sued the Trump administration almost 100 times when he was attorney general, including a lawsuit over Trump’s travel ban on people from certain Muslim-majority countries.

“I think the office has shown that it has led in the past and will continue to do so on every issue,” Campbell said.
