The volatile situation in Manipur has forced even politicians to take measures to defend themselves as angry mobs attack and burn their homes in a fresh wave of violence in the state.

PHE minister and Khurai MP Leishangthem Susindro Meitei has built a bunker in his house and kept weapons for self-defence as protesters have so far attacked the houses of 17 MLAs, including ministers and Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Politicians say that while security forces have been deployed, there is a general sense of insecurity in the state.

Speaking to News18, Meitei said: “The situation is not good. My PSO was hit and is in the hospital. The BSF jawan responsible for my security was also shot. We have to protect ourselves. Therefore, I built a bunker in my house. We want peace, but if we are attacked, we must fight back.”

Another MP whose house was attacked told News18: “We have more security now. If miscreants come, we will act according to the law.”

After the recovery of five bodies of missing women and children in the valley, the Meiteis are outraged and have decided to take matters into their own hands.

The state has also become politically volatile after the NPP withdrew its support from the government. Meanwhile, BJP MLAs will have a meeting with Chief Minister N Biren Singh at 6 pm on Monday to find the way forward and a possible intervention from Delhi.

The Center has decided to send 50 more CAPF companies comprising over 5,000 personnel to Manipur in view of the “challenging” security and law and order situation.

This comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) rushed 20 additional CAPF companies, 15 from the CRPF and five from the BSF to the state following an order issued on November 12 after violence erupted in Jiribam district and extended to other places.

Another 50 companies have been ordered to be rushed to Manipur by this week. While 35 units will be drawn from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the rest will be from the Border Security Force (BSF), the sources said.
