Kanpur: A two-and-a-half-year-old girl was accidentally shot while her father was testing the pistol for festive firing on the evening of November 16 in Nankari, Kalyanpur. The child succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The girl’s mother filed a police complaint against her husband within 24 hours of the incident. Police arrested the accused father after filing a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The weapon involved in the incident was also recovered.
The injured child was taken to a private hospital where he died during treatment on Sunday evening.
The incident took place at the residence of Rahul Yadav, a private sector employee, who lived with his wife Suman and their daughter Gauri in Nankari, Kalyanpur police jurisdiction. The household was preparing for Rahul’s sister Shivani’s wedding scheduled for November 17. The wedding party was expected from Chaubepur.
Rahul was examining a firearm for celebration firing during the wedding when the gun accidentally discharged and hit Gauri who was coming down the stairs.
On hearing the gunshot, people found Gauri bleeding on the stairs, leading to panic in the household. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital but could not survive. After her death, Suman approached the police station to report the incident.
ACP Kalyanpur Abhishek Kumar confirmed the arrest of the accused and said he would be jailed on Monday. He added that before prison, the accused will be questioned about the origin of the firearm. Investigations are ongoing.
