Malaysians demand road safety measures after VIP convoy and container accidents

Malaysians are calling on authorities to reveal the identity of a VIP whose convoy caused an accident on a highway at the weekend, as concerns for increased road safety follow the death of a 21-year-old woman who was crushed in her car by a container that fell from a speeding truck.

An unmarked black sedan with police-style flashing lights plowed into the back of a civilian car as it sped through traffic in a downpour to catch up with a VIP convoy on the North-South Expressway on Saturday from the state of Negeri Sembilan.

Dashcam footage from the victim’s car, which has been widely shared on social media in Malaysia, shows the vehicle swerving past two other cars before crashing into the victim’s car. The passengers in the car, including a child, could be heard crying and screaming.

No deaths were reported, but it is unclear if any were injured.

Many online users have called for VIP escorts to be banned for all but top leaders such as the king, prime minister and heads of state.

“Really pointless and dangerous as I’ve seen time and time again,” read one comment on X.

The VIP, whose identity remains unknown, has also been criticized for forcing traffic to split up and slow down, with many claiming the elites would have armies of personal assistants who could help manage time without causing problems for the public.
