Lions LB Alex Anzalone will miss significant time with a torn forearm

DETROIT — Detroit Lions starting linebacker Alex Anzalone suffered a fractured forearm in the team’s 52-6 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Anzalone suffered the injury while tackling Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. along the edge line. He left the game in the second quarter and was quickly ruled out after the initial questionable diagnosis.

Head coach Dan Campbell said the Lions are preparing to be without their linebacker and team captain for the next six to eight weeks. The short end of that timeline would put Anzalone back in the picture before the season is over. While the other side of early preparation begins to cut into the playoff picture.

“No, he’s not (good),” Dan Campbell said of Anzalone. “It looks like he’s broken his forearm so he’ll be out for six to eight weeks.”

Anzalone finished with five tackles, including one for a loss in the dominating win. Fellow linebackers Jack Campbell, Malcolm Rodriguez, Ben Niemann and Trevor Nowaske have played in Anzalone’s absence.

Jack Campbell led the way with nine tackles, including a tackle for loss and a shared sack with freshman edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. The second-year linebacker will likely take over the punt duties while Anzalone is out of action.

Rodriguez returned to action after missing the last two games with an ankle injury. Niemann entered the day questionable with an ankle injury. The Lions are already without Derrick Barnes (knee) and Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck) at linebacker, so depth has been challenged.

The group responded to the challenge by going six consecutive quarters without allowing an offensive touchdown. And the Jaguars struggled to get anything going in Week 11, mustering just 170 yards of net offense.

Anzalone is an almost every-time player for this defense. He leads the group calls and is one of the most important veteran leaders in that locker room.
