Car chase turned into trooper-involved shooting leaves one injured in KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) Drug and Crime Enforcement Division, as well as the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), are investigating a trooper-involved shooting Sunday morning.

According to MSHPjust before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a trooper tried to pull over a car for speeding northbound on Interstate 35 (I-35) in Clay County, Missouri. However, the driver accelerated and exited the highway instead of yielding.

The report said the driver got back on the freeway heading south into Jackson County. During the pursuit, a Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) helicopter monitoring the pursuit via a communications channel elected to arrive on scene and follow overhead. This allowed the MSHP soldiers on the ground to stop the pursuit and listen to updates from the KHP.

Both pursuits were eventually called off and the KHP helicopter returned across the state line to assist on another call.

MSHP officers drove to the last known location of the car and found it around 12:40 p.m. It was parked at Linwood Avenue and Van Brunt Avenue and the driver was still inside.

According to the MSHP report, troopers tried to stop the driver from fleeing again by placing a patrol car in front and behind the car. However, when the troopers got out of their cars, the driver reversed and hit one of the patrol cars, then accelerated forward and hit the other.

One of the soldiers standing in front of their car fired a gun at the suspect as he continued to try to run away. However, MSHP said the driver ended up going around the barricade and headed west on Interstate 70.

While fleeing, the driver exited onto Prospect Avenue and stopped near 13th Street before becoming “disabled.”

The driver then fled on foot but was arrested.

Two passengers were found in the car, but one was suffering from gunshot wounds.

The injured passenger was taken to the hospital and was later reported to have non-life threatening injuries. No soldiers were injured in the accident.

MSHP said the case is being investigated by the Patrol’s Drug and Crime Enforcement Division and members of the KCPD. KCPD’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit is also assisting with evidence collection.
