A grieving woman who made a late-night visit to a grave in a cemetery was raped by an unknown man, detectives have revealed.

The victim was physically assaulted as well as sexually assaulted by the man who was wearing a coat that may have had a fur-lined hood.

The sexual assault took place in a churchyard in Church Street, Edenbridge, Kent, a week ago but was not immediately reported to the police.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “It is reported that a woman visiting a cemetery near Church Street was physically and sexually assaulted by an unknown man.

‘The incident happened between 21:00 and 21:30 on Saturday, November 9. It was reported last Tuesday.

“The suspect was described as being quite tall and of thin build. He was wearing a coat that may have a fur hood.

The statement added: “Officers are continuing to carry out further inquiries to establish the full circumstances, including forensic analysis at the scene, checks for CCTV opportunities and extensive house-to-house enquiries.”

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

“Drivers with dash cams who may have been near the area, as well as businesses and residents with doorbell or CCTV cameras, are also asked to check for important footage.”
