On Friday evening, a gang brutally attacked two police officers in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar.

Police on Friday evening responded to a complaint at the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor store where a group of drunken men were causing disturbance. The complaint was filed by Isaki, who said he was attacked by the group.

Constables Ramkumar and Karuppasamy identified the group and tried to nab them. The situation escalated into a confrontation, during which one of the men seized a baton (lathi) from the police and used it to attack Ramkumar.

When Karuppasamy tried to stop the group, he was pushed aside. As he tried to record the incident on his phone, one of the men snatched the device and another punched him.

A bystander caught the altercation on his cellphone.

Other officers arrived and rescued Ramkumar and Karuppasamy, who were later shifted to a government hospital. Following their complaint, the police registered a case against nine persons, including Palpandi, Kilirajan, Panjali Raja and Pandiaraj. Seven of the accused have been arrested, while police are looking for the remaining two.

The investigation is ongoing.
