Late water bill scam victimizes Littlestown

Littlestown Borough Police say someone received an email about owing more than $1,000 on an overdue water bill. But the police chief says it was all a hoax.

Littlestown Police Chief Charles Kellar saw the email and immediately knew it wasn’t from them because he is also the district administrator and the district handles the water and sewer bills.

Kellar said he was concerned because the email appeared legitimate. It contains the victim’s real name, home address and other information that could lead anyone to believe this is real.

Kellar pointed out that the most important part to watch out for is something in the email that asks the victim to do, including a link or button to click.

“Of course you’re jumping on the bandwagon, which you never want to do,” Kellar said. He added that the link in the email prompts the victim to set up a payment to avoid late fees, and many people could fall through the cracks.

Kellar said he’s concerned that there have been more people who have received this fake water bill late message and haven’t even realized it’s a scam yet. He encourages people to report immediately.

“We urge anyone who receives this to call Littlestown police or call me at the municipal office and we will look into what they receive. But we don’t send anything other than what’s in our daily emails or on the district’s website,” Kellar said.

Kellar also advised people not to take any action if there are messages asking for gift cards as payment.
