Broncos RB is expected to grow with a new team in 2025

The Denver Broncos they had one of the league’s best defenses in 2024, but the team is still trying to create a complete offense.

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix has excelled despite the lack of effective offensive weapons around him, and regardless of the outcome of this season, bringing in more playmakers for Nix to work with must be the team’s focus this offseason. While adding a dynamic wide receiver and improving the tight end position should be top priorities, the running back position also needs to be thoroughly evaluated.

Audric Estime and Jaleel McLaughlin look like strong assets going forward, but are either of these guys a true No. 1 running back? Javonte Williams he had all the makings of a top running back when the team selected him in the second round of the 2021 draft, but after a knee injury early in the 2022 season, he was never the same.

Williams is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and the Broncos will likely allow him to test the market. If there is a perfect fit for Williams out there, Bleacher Report’s Christopher Knox feels like it’s the Minnesota Vikings.

While examining what Saquon Barkley has done in his first year with the Philadelphia Eagles this season, Knox takes a look at six players who could experience the same kind of resurgence with a new team next year. Williams makes his list. Here is part of Knox’s assessment:

“The Minnesota Vikings would be an ideal landing spot for Williams. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has regularly used his running backs as threats in the running and passing games – a role for which Williams is well equipped.”

The Vikings could make sense for Williams as a rotational back. They have Aaron Jones, but he’ll be 30 in a few weeks. They already have to trade this offseason to acquire more depth, taking Cam Akers from the Houston Texans, and Williams could bring the team a great No. 2 guy in a run-friendly offense to succeed.

Vikings running back depth chart

Player Age 2,024 rushing yards
Aaron Jones 30 653
Ty Chandler 26 169
Cam Akers 25 84
CJ Ham (defender) 31 10
Myles Gaskin 27 -1

There’s an obvious fit here for Williams, so if he hits free agency, the Vikings could certainly take a look.

If Williams is to leave Denver, the team will have Estime and McLaughlin as backups, though they could also turn to free agency or the draft for reinforcements. Tyler Badie is still on the roster, waiting to return from injured reserve, and fans would still like to see Blake Watson, the uncapped official.

Estime got the bulk of the work last week against the Kansas City Chiefs and the team seems ready to move forward with him as the starter.

Either way, the Broncos need to be ready to address the running back situation in a major way this offseason.
