Sundance Headthe country singer who won The voice in 2016, he was hospitalized on Friday after accidentally shooting himself near his ranch in Texas.

The singer’s agent said CBS News that Head was hunting alone in the woods when he accidentally shot himself once in the stomach when his firearm “slipped out of its holster, hit the side of the jeep and discharged in his stomach area.”

The singer is currently in stable condition, his wife Misty Head added her husband’s Facebook account.

“It wasn’t his shotgun and nobody shot him,” Misty Head wrote. “He was getting out of the vehicle, reaching out to grab his 22, when he grabbed it, the 22 came out of its holster and hit the outside of the Jeep squarely and drove off. Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodge.”

Misty added that the bullet “entered above the navel and lodged in the abdominal wall” and missed “all the vital organs.”

“It won’t require surgery because it doesn’t remove the bullet,” she added. “I’m sure (his doctor) said why, but my head is in a fog right now. Being on the bigger side was a good thing. The bullet is in his fatty tissue.”

Misty Head added that her husband did not bring his cell phone with him, but was able to flag down another vehicle and that the driver called 911. Sundance was then taken to the hospital.

“He’s in a good mood considering the last few hours,” Misty continued. “The children are with him now. The prayers were answered as the bullet caused no internal damage. Thank you all for your prayers.”

Sundance Head, son of singer Roy Head, won The voice singing competition in 2016 as a member of Blake Shelton’s team. The singer has released two albums since being crowned winner that season, most recently in 2022 Starting again.
