Sam Altman responds to Elon Musk on the Grok vs ChatGPT debate: “Which car is on the left?”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hit back at X owner and entrepreneur Elon Musk over his repeated comments about ChatGPT’s left-wing bias. Altman shared a post on X comparing results from Grok and ChatGPT for a question about the choice between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the US presidential election and, without naming Musk, asked which one was “the left-wing propaganda machine “.

“What should the leftist propaganda machine be again?” Altman proclaimed in his X post.

“We’re proud of how consistently chatgpt scores as the least biased ai in ratings. This is an important default value (and then users should have plenty of options to customize),” added the OpenAI CEO

In particular, Musk has often criticized ChatGPT for being “too woke”. In response to a post last year, for example, Musk wrote: “The virus of the awakened mind, which is fundamentally anti-human, has been deeply embedded in ChatGPT!”

Elon Musk and OpenAI:

For those in the know, Musk has a long history with OpenAI, co-founding the AI startup with Sam Altman and Greg Brockman in 2015 before leaving the company in 2018 due to disagreements over its direction. Musk also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI earlier this year, saying OpenAI along with Altman and Brockman breached the company’s contract and put commercial interests ahead of the public good.

In a recent filing, Musk claims that OpenAI is now actively trying to eliminate competitors like xAI by asking investors not to fund them. The billionaire also amended the original lawsuit and added Microsoft to the mix, saying OpenAI gets an unfair advantage in AI because of Microsoft’s infrastructure and expertise.

“Microsoft and OpenAI, apparently unhappy with their monopoly, or near-monopoly, in generative artificial intelligence (“AI”) are now actively trying to eliminate competitors like xAI by extracting promises from investors not to fund them,” Musk’s lawyers wrote. in an amended complaint filed this week in federal court in Oakland, California.

“Never before has a corporation gone from a tax-exempt charity to a for-profit gorgon that cripples the $157 billion market — and in just eight years,” the complaint added.
