Victims of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina: Where is FEMA?

(NewsNation) – North Carolina Hurricane Helene victims struggle and feel forgotten as winter approaches.

Temperatures are dropping and many hurricane survivors are living in uninsulated tents or trailers.

More than 100,000 homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina.

Hurricane victims in Swannanoa, North Carolina, told NewsNation’s Brian Entin that they have lost everything and are “not getting any help.”

A woman who asked to be identified as Sarah, whose family now lives in a trailer, said her family has to pay an extra $130 a month for a portable toilet. Sarah hoped to receive disaster relief from the government, only to be told the funds have run out.

“We’re already having such a hard time and not being able to get the financial help we need, it’s really awful,” Sarah said.

President-elect Donald Trump criticized the Biden administration’s response to Helene, echoing complaints from residents who have they said they could not communicate with FEMA relief workers.

When asked if his criticism of FEMA was helpful, Trump replied that he and everyone else have a right to criticize people who aren’t doing their best job.

And the former president did was accused of spreading disinformation about the administration’s response, such as cleanup crews avoiding so-called Republican-leaning areas. FEMA says it is it is not true.

NewsNation’s Brian Entin FEMA asked an interview, but was told, “We have limited availability due to our ongoing response.”
