Woman charged in deadly Mountain Brook wreck initially believed to be a single-vehicle accident

A Birmingham woman has been charged in the traffic death of a man on Montclair Road in Mountain Brook.

Hannah Gray Williams, 30, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with injury, police said Friday.

He was killed in the accident Robert Ashley May Jr., 33, Montgomery native and former Troy University cheerleader.

The fatal crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the 3900 block of Montclair Road.

Officers discovered what they believed to be a single-vehicle crash in which May was ejected. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he died a short time later.

As officers interviewed witnesses at the scene of the crash, it was revealed that a second vehicle was involved and fled the scene before the officer arrived, police said Friday.

They later determined that the second vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and dangerous and reckless driving that contributed to the accident.

The case was presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office Thursday and warrants were issued against Williams.

It was not immediately clear if Williams is in custody.

May graduated from Stanhope Elmore High School, where he was a standout player on the varsity football team and was named Defensive Player of the Year.

She was also a standout baseball player and attended Troy University on a cheerleading scholarship, the family said.

He worked as a collision repair specialist at Carvana in Bessemer, specializing in foreign cars.

In a Facebook post, the family wrote: “To know Robert was to love him. It was beautiful. He was a great person. He was an older brother and an uncle. It was a great thing.”

“He was the best son,” the family wrote. “The world is less bright now.”
