Deputies say man tried to kill EMS worker with scissors while in back of ambulance

EDGECOMBE COUNTY, NC (WITN) – A Pennsylvania man is facing four counts of attempted first degree murder after a traffic accident in an Eastern Carolina county.

Carlos Santos-Guifarro, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was arrested last night after Edgecombe County deputies say he stabbed an EMS worker in the neck with a pair of scissors.

Deputies say the man’s vehicle ran off the US 64 bypass and landed on Howard Avenue Extension. He, a woman, and her two children were in the vehicle.

While in the back of an ambulance, Santos-Guifarro began stabbing the EMS worker, according to a news release. Deputies tasered the man and he was arrested. They say the EMS worker will be fine.

After the mother and her two daughters arrived at the hospital, authorities quickly learned that their injuries were not from the car accident. Deputies say they have determined the wreck was not an accident, but a criminal act.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Santos-Guifarro, 34, also faces three counts of assault by strangulation.

He was jailed on $3 million bail.
