Propane truck crash, spill in Crystal River prompts evacuations near Marble | News

An overturned propane truck near Chair Mountain Ranch outside of Marble City is leaking propane into the Crystal River and prompted an evacuation of residences and a shelter in place Friday afternoon.

According to a Pitkin Alert issued at 12:02 a.m. Friday, a hazardous materials incident advised residents on Evergreen Lane, on the east side of the Crystal River, to evacuate immediately, while residents on the west side of Nub Street, Gulch Way, Alpine Street and Aspen Street were told to shelter in place.

The propane truck overturned on Gunnison County Road 3, which splits from Highway 133 before McClure Pass and heads toward Marble. No injuries were reported in the crash, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The road is closed from 133 to the 1.5 mile marker.

Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie said the truck crashed into the river and was “gassing” into it.

“They had a sizable propane tank,” Murdie said. “Flammable gases in an accident like this, every once in a while you even see on the news where there’s an explosion or something like that and I guess that’s why before the state patrol was even on the scene, they were the ones who they put the evacuation zone”.

Murdie added that they had deputies on the scene within minutes of the incident.

The duration of the closure time is not yet known.

Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District, Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office and CSP responded to the incident. As of 12:30 p.m., the CSP hazardous materials control team was en route to the scene.
